How To Talk About Hobbies In English

Talking About Your Hobbies

One of the most popular topics of conversation when you first meet someone might be to discuss the things you like to do in your free time. It is therefore very important to be able to talk freely about this. Here are some questions that you might ask when speaking to someone about hobbies.

  • What do you like to do?
  • What are your hobbies?
  • What things do you get up at weekends?

In reply to these questions, you may say something that begins like this:

  • In my free time…
  • In my spare time…
  • My hobbies include…
  • When I have free time, I…
  • As a way to relax I…

We are now going to look at some of the conversations which you might have when talking about your hobbies.

  • Person 1; “What do you like doing in your spare time?”
  • Person 2; “I enjoy cooking and baking but when the weather is nice, I also like to go horse riding. What are your hobbies?”
  • Person 1; “On weekends, I like to go into the mountains and do a little hiking.”
  • Person 1; “I saw John last weekend at the beach.”
  • Person 2; “Yes, he regularly goes there to do some surfing, he is very good at it.”
  • Person 1; “What are your hobbies?”
  • Person 2; “In the summer time, I like to go fishing and camping but in the winter, I always go on vacation to the mountains as my real passion is skiing.”

Describing Your Hobby

If you want to expand on what your hobby is and what it involves then you will need to know the relevant language to do this. We are now going to look at two examples of people describing what their hobbies are in a little more detail.

  • “My hobby is playing soccer. This is a game with 11 players on each team and the aim is for the players to score goals. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. I play soccer for a local team and we take part in various tournaments throughout the year. I enjoy my hobby because it is a great form of exercise but also it is a very good way of spending time with other people.”
  • “In my spare time, I enjoy gardening. I do this at least three times a week and I find it very relaxing but also it is good because I grow my own vegetables. This ties in with my other hobby which is cooking. Being able to do the two things at home is a good option for me since I struggle to get out and about so I am kept entertained at home this way.”

Conclusion

There are so many hobbies and there is something for everyone when it comes to finding an activity to take part in during our spare time. However, when speaking in the English language, it is important to be able to refer to your hobby correctly and to talk about it freely.
